Tanzania
Northern Tanzania is renowned for having one of the highest concentrations of game in Africa. In the first few months of the year the plains of the southern Serengeti become a giant maternity ward, as wildebeest calves are born in their thousands.
The Ngorongoro Crater has been a World Heritage Site since 1978 and is nothing short of one of the wonders of the world. Wildlife within the crater is spectacular, and this unique experience should not be missed.
Tarangire National Park is dominated by huge baobabs and large herds of elephant, whilst nearby Lake Manyara is famed for its tree-climbing lions, and flaunts a wide variety of water birds and flamingos.
The vast wilderness areas of the Selous and Ruaha in the south, Mahale on the eastern shores of Lake Tanganyika, and Katavi in the west, remain wild and untamed, where game is unused to any kind of interference, often needing to be shooed off the airstrip to allow your plane to land.
An intricate network of scheduled charter flights links the otherwise impracticably great distances separating Tanzania's northern and southern game areas.
