South Africa

Some would say that South Africa has it all, and they are not far wrong. It is a complete destination in itself, but it also combines very well with its neighbouring countries, and Indian Ocean islands.

Spread beneath the imposing flat-topped Table Mountain lies the cosmopolitan city of Cape Town, surrounded by a spectacular coastline. The famous wine estates of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek are within an hour’s drive of the city.

Base yourself in the heart of the Garden Route for a few days, and walk along its beautiful coastline; or stay in the malaria-free Addo Elephant Park in the Eastern Cape, one of the prime areas to see large elephant herds.

Game lodges in Kruger National Park are luxurious in all aspects, as well as being able to offer fantastic game viewing.  Interior décor is worthy of top designers, and many lodges have private plunge pools as well as a spa.

Non-malaria game areas exist in Madikwe, the Waterbergs and the Eastern Cape. Many lodges in these areas also specialise in providing family accommodation with exclusive use of game vehicles and guides.

The Zulu battlefields in the Midlands are steeped in the colourful history of this country, and a few days at Fugitives Drift will give a fascinating insight into the Anglo-Zulu war.

Driving in South Africa is a pleasure, and many visitors prefer the independence of self-drive. Alternatively you can criss-cross the country by using an efficient network of scheduled flights, or by the most celebrated and luxurious railways in Africa.
