Kenya : Activities
What to do
Game drives, nature walks, bird watching, hot air ballooning, horse riding, camel treks, visits to Masai villages, deep-sea and lake fishing. Beach extensions to the Kenya Coast, Lamu, or Zanzibar.
Family holidays
Kenyans have a special rapport with children, and family safaris have become very much more popular in the past few years.
Where to do it
Masai Mara Game Reserve
If you only have time to visit one game park, the vast open plains and abundant wildlife make this the favourite choice. The annual wildebeest migration is in the Mara during July – October.
Samburu National Park
The premier national park in Northern Kenya, and an excellent combination with the Mara. This region is arid, with such species as reticulated giraffe and Grevy’s zebra, which are indigenous to this area of Kenya.
Amboseli & Chuylu Hills
Amboseli is known for large elephant herds and spectacular views of Mt Kilimanjaro. The adjacent Chuyulu Hills offers stunning mountain ranges in a wilderness area, easily combinable with Amboseli.
Meru National Park
Meru National Park, close to Mt Kenya, offers a wide diversity of habitat and landscape, with 13 perennial rivers running through it. It is one of the best places to see cheetah and leopard.
Laikipia
The Laikipia region in central Kenya stretches between Mt Kenya and Samburu. Abundant in wildlife, and with no park restrictions, night game drives, horse-riding and walking are additional activities offered to the usual game drives.
Rift Valley lakes
When the Great Rift Valley gauged its way through Kenya, it left several lakes in its wake. The most well known are Lake Naivasha for the spectacular sight of thousands of pink flamingos, and Lake Nakuru, where black rhino are commonly spotted.
Tsavo
Tsavo is the largest game reserve in Kenya, and the closest to Mombasa. With four rivers and numerous watering holes, good game viewing opportunities are ensured throughout the year. It is one of the best places for bird watchers
Lake Victoria
The islands on Lake Victoria offer a wonderful respite from a hectic safari, and a good alternative to the beach. Rusinga Island and Mfangano Island both have extremely comfortable lodges, with the option to fish, visit local villages or just relax.
Kenya Coast
Despite the fact that Mombasa hotels are abundant, don’t discount the Kenya Coast altogether. Malindi, Watamu and Kiwayu north of Mombasa are away from the hubbub. Lamu Island remains quaint and essentially unspoiled.
